Below is a collection of stories from a day in the life of The Little Pantry. These stories share the everyday workings of the pantry, and aim to share the common connection we see every day with our friends and visitors. They are stories of hope, sadness, dignity, trust, and most importantly, love. Enjoy!
Today was the Best Day Ever at TLPTC! I wanted to talk about all the Gift Giving that went on today. Since last night we have given out a bed, kitchen table, 2 microwaves, a tent, about a dozen pairs of shoes and jeans, several sets of bedding, 2 coats, a wheelchair, oh, and lots of FOOD! I could keep going, but you get the picture. It was like Christmas, but maybe even better, because these gifts were given by some amazing people who had nothing to gain. George, Richard, Christopher, Sherry, Jen, Peggy, Chris, Maykao, Margaret. I could keep going, but again, you get the picture.
In the middle of all this Gift Giving, I was given the Best Gift Ever myself. I was spinning around when I look up and see this face. It was Scott. Scott is a young guy – nice looking guy – heart of gold guy – little bit of a temper guy. He had a really, really good job he got right out of high school. He had a family who cared about him. He had a problem with alcohol. And, that problem cost him his job, his family, his self-respect, his everything.
When I met him, he was already pretty low. When he was hanging out with his friends, he was the life of the party – not a care in the world. When it was just us, he would tell me that he couldn’t believe the turn his life had taken. He was miserable and had no idea how to take control of the things that ruled him. My heart ached for him even after the day he finally went to rehab. Sometimes it doesn’t work – sometimes people give up…. Well, that was 5 months ago, and today he walked back in to see his “LP Family” as a new man. Good job, fiancé, nice truck, big smile, confidence oozing. When I told him how proud we are of him, it made him feel so good. It also reminded me why we don’t give up on people. Now that was the Best Gift Ever.
Can Openers, Tents, Sleeping Bags, Socks and Reading Glasses. Monetary gifts and Food donations are always appreciated.
